Macrame is definitely an age-old craft depending on tying knots using fiber cords. This craft has been around for hundreds of years, and will be traced back to the thirteenth century. The art was believed to have originated together with the Arab weavers who travel through the desert and trade the items in their craftsmanship with town dwellers.
Soon enough, the craftsmanship of miniature fairy garden accessories spread all through Europe, attracting the fascination of everybody throughout the social classes. The adoration for macrame heated up within the seventies. In that decade, macrame plant hangers were always seen everywhere. Throughout this revival period, the craft focused more on textiles and furnishings, like macrame hammocks, chairs and decorative macrame accessories used in the home. When the rockin’ and rollin’ eighties came, macrame had faded from people’s memories.
This disappearance did not last for very long, however. With all the nineties came the grunge scene, and once again, age-old craft experienced a revival of sorts, even if this time in the form of hemp jewelry. Macrame bracelets and necklaces might be purchased at craft fairs and shops. The natural earthy look of hemp was the perfect complement for the knotted art.
Now, this ancient art form is again being resurrected, though with a larger audience at heart. The industry of Haute Couture has begun experimenting with it.
